Needle Stick Policies and Procedures

After following the ACOM Needle Stick policy, follow the core site policy below:

*HCA Florida West Hospital will perform initial testing on the source patient for any blood and body fluid exposure.  Any post-exposure testing for the student or prophylaxis care will be the responsibility of the student.

  • During regular business hours, notify the department supervisor who will assist in entering a Non-Patient Incident Report.  Then contact Employee Health (EH) at *4-5117.
  • After hours or when EHN is unavailable, notify the department supervisor and the Administrative House Supervisor.
  • Exposure Protocol will be initiated.  The source patient will be tested for HIV/HBV/HCV.  The EHN or House Supervisor will notify you of test results.
  • Per each student's school policy, the student may be directed to the ER if Rapid HIV returns positive or if patient is evaluated to be High Risk.
