ACOM Students and Faculty Won Second Place in the OMED '21 Poster Competition for Their QI Research on Low-Dose CT Scan Compliance
ACOM students, alumnus, and faculty Jonathan Carbungco, MS, OMS-IV; Brittany Woody, MS, OMS-I; Britni Smith, DO; Veronica Hill, MSN; Robin Fischer, DNP; and Justin Hovey, MD were awarded second place at the annual OMED conference last week for their poster entitled "Early detection of lung cancer in adults: Quality improvement and implementation in the rural health setting."
The low-dose computerized tomography (LDCT) quality improvement project aimed to improve the rates of low-dose CT scans ordered for those who need it at ACOM's Ashford Clinic. By improving screening and providing literature to patients, the rates were improved by about 20%. LDCTs reduce the mortality of lung cancer by 14-20% and are an important part of preventative medicine for tobacco users.
Abby Cook, OMS-IV, Awarded First Place in the Health Sciences Division in the Alabama Academy of Science Poster Presentation
Student physician Abby Cook received first place in the Health Sciences Poster Competition at the Alabama Academy of Science 98th Annual Meeting on March 18th, 2021 for her poster entitled "Rural Reproductive Health: An Analysis of Education and Access for Young Alabama Women."
Summary of her presentation: Teens and young women of Alabama consistently have poor outcomes related to their reproductive health. There's a unique mix of variables that contribute to this and I particularly wanted to look at the dynamics within rural communities and the state's legislative climate related to reproductive health that affects them. A big part of the struggle to improve their outcomes starts with supporting comprehensive sex education, training resources for providers, and expanding healthcare coverage for these populations at risk.
Ms. Cook shared, "It was a great experience and I highly recommend it to any students in the future."
