A case report is a description of a unique clinical case shared in order to inform the medical community and to stimulate further research on the topic. Case reports are a way for medical students and new physicians to get started in research. As Juyal, et al says, case reports are a valuable component of evidence-based medicine because they are "sources of information on new and unusual clinical observations that may lead to subsequent research advances."
For students, writing case reports improves critical thinking and writing skills and exposes students to the peer review publication process and working collaboratively with faculty and physicians.
