Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation -- Summer Institute for Medical Students (SIMS)

Often described by participants as "a life-changing experience," the Summer Institute for Medical Students program provides an inside look at the dynamics of addiction and the process of healing.

By shadowing addiction treatment patients and family program participants, you will gain extraordinary insight into the dynamics of addiction and the process of healing. Your five-day week on campus, specifically designed for medical students, will include:

  • Classroom instruction
  • Clinical observation
  • Integration into patient life

Substance use disorders are arguably the nation's leading health problem. Our intensive educational program prepares you to effectively address all aspects of the disease in your medical practice, from assessment to treatment to recovery issues. Lecture topics include:

  • Bio-psycho-social-spiritual aspects of the disease of addiction
  • Evidence-based and holistic approaches to care
  • Twelve Step recovery principles and practices
