Questions about Yourself & Your Personal Goals

Before you enter the match, ask yourself some of the following questions to help you choose the specialty that's right for you.

  • What were your original goals when you entered medical school?  Are they still applicable?
  • What lessons did you learn from your family about the nature of relationships, caregiving, and responses to illness?
  • How has the "culture" of medical training affected your attitudes?
  • What sorts of patients elicit an angry reaction from you?
  • What are your usual responses to your own anger and the anger of others?  Do you overreact, placate, blame others, suppress your feelings, become super-reasonable?
  • What are some practical strategies and steps you can take to achieve balance and decrease stress?
