- enthusiasm for the topic
- good clinician -- helps you learn from what he saw
- treats ancillary staff well
- gives constructive criticism
- gives guidance through feedback
- ability to instill confidence in the student
- develop a rapport with the student -- start out slow and increase responsibilities as you go along
- sets expectations at the beginning
- able to communicate with patients on a level where the patient can understand
