In an ever evolving digital world, information can get lost, misplaced, or even destroyed without warning. This guide is to assist in helping to prevent those mentioned mishaps from potentially occurring to your research.

Research Data Management can be described as the process of collecting, organizing, storing, preserving, and sharing of collected data. This will ensure that your data maintains integrity, and allows you to preserve your data in a data repository making it accessible and discoverable for future research.

The best practice when you decide to begin practicing data management is to have an action plan and make it a habit.

  • Write a high quality Data Management Plan
  • Create a consistent file organization system
  • Create and use spreadsheets
  • Collaborate and know roles and responsibilities of members of the team
  • Document
  • Establish privacy and security guidelines
  • Find a data repository to share the collected data
  • Store and back up data
  • Archive and Preserve data
